KŪKAʻŌHIʻA
PAPAKŪ MAKAWALU STUDENT SYMPOSIUM
Papakū Makawalu is a methodology that categorizes and organizes the natural world through a Native Hawaiian knowledge base and perspective. It allows students to ask scientific inquiry questions and then seek the answers through studying ancestral scientific documentation found in oli (chants) and ʻōlelo noʻeau (proverbs). Students also collect their own data based on rigorous observation of their environment. Students in grades 7 -11 at Ka ʻUmeke Kāʻeo will be presenting their research on a variety of questions stemming from the study of ʻŌhiʻa on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at Hawaiʻi Community College from 9:00am - 2:30pm.
Their research includes testing acidity levels in soil related to the proximity to the luapele, identifing factors that make Keauhou forest an ideal habitat for ʻŌhiʻa, studying the correlation between leaf litter and soil chemistry as well as cataloging ʻŌhiʻa bark phenotype varieties among field sites.
Students will be presenting their findings to a panel of experts. Their presentations will include original ʻŌlelo Noʻeau (proverb) related to their findings, historical context, methodology, results and conclusion.
This symposium is a performance based assessment that will demonstrate their ability to create a cohesive presentation, utilze appropriate Papakū Makawalu methodology, articulate and present results and develop a viable conclusion based on the results.
